How it works

Six formats, one yardstick

  1. 1

    Everything rated the same way

Every one of the 80,795 movies, TV shows, video games, podcasts, authors, and games and sports was rated on the same long list of questions about its tone, audience, and style.

  2. 2

6 scales, each between two opposites

A psychometric model condenses those ratings into 6 scales that each run from one extreme to its opposite: masculine to feminine, accessible to intellectual, kids to adults, and so on. Zero is the middle of everything rated.

  3. 3

Two ways to match, always a mix

Describe what you want finds what sits closest to your settings. Start from favorites looks up each favorite's closest neighbors in our similarity database and adds them up. Either way, at least two of the results come from each of the six formats, so a favorite show can lead you to a game, a podcast, or a book.
